October 19

Just a quick update. AJ Shankar, a huge Freaks fan eternally in search of used copies of their CDs, has located an excellent resource for people who still need to add the Cakewalk or Tantilla CDs to their collections. A company called Second Spin (www.secondspin.com) is selling used copies of these CDs for $4-$6. They have a limited number in stock, so make sure you reserve yours soon. This is a great bargain, and much easier than scouring every cut-out and used bin from here to Oklahoma.

Also, there is a reseller who pulls together in-stock merchandise for several web-based used CD sellers at www.gemm.com. They list a ton of Freaks material, including the stuff available at Second Spin, so you might want to try searching this database first since it seems to be more extensive.

Lots of new stuff this week, with more on the way soon. The biggest addition is Bryan's notes on the making of "All My Friends", which, even though it is only a six song EP recorded over four days, turns out to be a major turning point for the Freaks. I have also reformatted the individual album pages to include liner notes. Someday I'll get around to adding the lyrics, too.

The Ask Bryan section has also been updated again. As always, feel free to submit more questions. Bryan and I are both going to try to be more diligent about keeping this section updated.

I'll soon be adding some promo stuff sent to me by a fan, including a poster, a set list, and a note from the press kit for "All My Friends". If you have any memoribilia, interviews, or anything else that you'd like to share, please send an email to freaks@bluecricket.com.

I have updated the Ask Bryan section with a new question and answer. Keep them coming—Bryan has been very responsive so far, and there are still several in the queue, but I can always use more.

A.J. Shankar reports that there is a HoF discussion board that is active but hasn't been used in a while. If you are interested in participating and chatting with other Freaks fans, follow this link to get there.

July 20

Bryan has put off going to Portugal to start recording his new record. The band that he wanted to back him just released their own record, and are touring to support it. He still plans to do it whenever the scheduling can be worked out.

The Gutterball concerts that Bryan had mentioned as a possibility this summer are also on hold due to scheduling problems. He and Steve Wynn are still trying to work out a few shows for the Fall, and there is talk of another Gutterball record late this year or early next year.

In the meantime, check out the new Ask Bryan feature. This is where Bryan answers questions submitted to him by fans. If you have any, send them to freaks@bluecricket.com and I will make sure that he gets them.

July 5

Bryan has been busy again, writing comments about the making of Tantilla similar to the ones I posted earlier for Monkey on a Chain Gang. A fascinating read for any Freaks fan, especially those interested in the writing and recording process. He has also started to answer some of the letters that I have passed on to him from everyone out there; I will try to start posting those every week or so. In the meantime, keep them coming. We have enough material for a few weeks, but after the initial flood the questions started to trail off a bit. If you have anything you would like Bryan to answer here, please pass it on to me at freaks@bluecricket.com.

If you check any of the other areas of this site regularly, you might have noticed that I have entered into partnerships with Amazon.com and CDnow to resell books and CDs in an effort to raise money to register a domain name and move this site to a commercial server (I will lose my university account in the next few months). Unfortunately, all of the House of Freaks and Gutterball records are out of print (although you can still order Invisible Jewel and the Gutterball records directly from Enemy Records at their website). However, you can find other Freaks-related material, including Sparklehorse, Magnet, and Steve Wynn.

If you use either of these services, I encourage you to use the links provided on my pages, especially the Plug site, since CDnow's arrangement allows me to receive a credit for anything the you purchase within two hours of following my link, not just those CDs linked directly from my site. I think that I am going to soon add a book section to the site so that I can resell more than just Paul Auster's books, so keep your eye out for and and please send me any suggestions of what you would like to see there.

May 24

I have now added a links section that has links to other sites related to House of Freaks, including sites about bands that Johnny and Bryan have played with, and HoF's last record company, Enemy Records. I have also (finally) posted the comments that Bryan sent me about the making of Monkey on a Chain Gang, the Freaks' first album. Very interesting stuff. He'll hopefully send me comments about the other albums in the near future. Finally, I have this note from Bryan about his solo record:

I am going to release my solo record ... in Portugal. I'm going to record basics at the Sound of Music in Richmond, with a drummer and then fly to Portugal to record with Realejo, a traditional Portugese folk band, who play instruments like the sanfonia, the bandolim, and the concertina. No release date set and I'm not sure if it will be available in the US....

I'll post more information about this record as it becomes available. Hopefully it will find a U.S. distributor. In the meantime, keep sending me (freaks@bluecricket.com) any questions you have for Bryan. I hope to start a once or twice a month feature where Bryan will answer questions from his fans by the end of the summer. I've already gotten several good sets of questions, but I can always use more.

April 27

Well, Bryan finally got online and has contacted me via email. He really wants to be involved with the site now that has an easy way to stay in touch, so there will be a lot of new material coming here soon. I am also planning to do an interview with him, so if you have any questions that you've always wanted to ask, send them to freaks@bluecricket.com and I'll do my best to get them answered for you. Meanwhile, here is what Bryan had to say about what he's up to now:

Steve Wynn—currently on tour supporting his latest solo record, "Sweetness and Light"; just finished a 12 week tour of Europe and now touring the USA. I don't speak to him as much now as I did when Gutterball was going strong, but I just contacted him last week, and we've been communicating via e-mail. We're talking about doing another Gutterball record this year and maybe a Richmond show this summer.

Johnny Hott—well, I am painting a house with him right now, so I see him every day; it's the most I've seen him in 2 years, but we're still good friends and we've been enjoying hanging out together. he getting married this fall.

We have no plans to do another Freaks record. That is prett much dead ... but one never knows.

Armistead Wellford—just saw him on Thursday at his mother's funeral. Johnny, Armistead, Stephen McCarthy and I played a song for her at her grave. Armistead is living between Athens, GA doing Love Tractor stuff and Richmond.

Stephen McCarthy—I paint houses with Steve. I talk to him about once every couple of days. We do have a Hawaiian lounge band that plays every now and then at Tiki and cocktail parties. He plays steel guitar and I play uke ... pretty swanky stuff.

Me—well, I did record a solo record at home 2 years ago. Never released it though I did have a few offers. I just never felt like putting forth the energy. It's a good record though, maybe my favorite of anything I've done. I have a new offer from a European label to release it. I may go with that offer, becuase I can get to record with some Portugese musicians who I like quite a bit and I can go to Portugal. Also, I've done some session work. I played guitar for a record by a band called Magnet which features Mo Tucker, from The Velvet Underground, on drums. David Lowery produced. Bob Rupe on bass. In addition, I played guitar, bass and piano on a record by September 67 from Charlottesville ... that was a couple of years back but it's a nice record.

Otherwise, I'm helpling Kathryn run World of Mirth, bartending one night a week, working in a very hip Cuban restaurant, painting houses when I'm broke and mostly enjoying raising my incredible daughter, Stella.

So that's the latest from the world of Bryan Harvey. As a fan, I'm very excited about the possibility of a new Gutterball album and Bryan's solo work finally seeing the light of day. Like I said, if you have any questions you would like Bryan to answer, email them to me. Also, Bryan is interested in doing a weekly Q+A, similar to what Loud Family frontman Scott Miller is doing on the Loud Family website. So even if I don't get to ask your question during the interview, it may still get answered in writing by Bryan and posted to the site.
