November 4

Bryan actually tried to call me a few weeks ago, but I wasn't in at the time. My wife talked to him and said he was very nice, very open, so I'm hoping I'll hear back from him again soon. In the meantime, here is a link to a recent article about Bryan that appeared in a weekly Richmond magazine.

September 21

I went to Richmond yesterday and finally met Kathryn, Bryan Harvey's wife, at their store downtown. She was very nice, and filled me in on what's going on with the Freaks/Gutterball contingent. Bryan still has his unmixed solo album, which Kathryn says is excellent, but he is not sure if he wants to put in the effort mix it and negotiate with a record label for its release. She says he's kind of enjoying being a recluse and staying home with their ten month old daughter, but that he's playing in a just-for-fun side project with Steve McCarthy called Poi Boy, a Hawaiian band that has played several unusual venues around Richmond, including a Moose Lodge. Johnny has left Cracker, and is currently on tour with Lauren Hoffman. Kathryn said she'd pass on my name and phone number to Bryan; hopefully I can set up some kind of informal interview with him to find out what's going on musically with him right now. I'll keep you posted.

A number of you have written me asking about how to obtain copies of the Freaks records. They are generally very hard to find, since most are out of print, but Invisible Jewel and the two Gutterball records are available from the enemy records website. Otherwise, I would suggest combing the used bins of your local record stores. You can always write to me to see what I have available (even though I have copies of all their stuff, I always buy anything I find in the used bins), but odds are that I won't have much. But don't be afraid to look in strange places; recently I found two copies of Cakewalk on CD in my local Sam's Club for $2 each (they have since been dispatched to fans in Boston and Spain).

August

I just got an email today about Bryan's new album. He has apparently finished it, but doesn't want to spend the time and energy to put it out. He wants to release it if he can make some kind of modest profit on it, but until he finds a someone who's willing to release it (my source gets the impression that he doesn't really want to deal with a record company himself), it's just going to be sitting in the vaults, unheard. I am trying to confirm this with him, but if you have any leads on a label or a person that would want to release this album, please let me know.

June

Bryan Harvey has recorded an album's worth of material which he hopes to release soon. In the meantime, he's working on a new side project called Girl-O-Meter with Steve McCarthy (of Gutterball and Long Ryders), Paul Watson (who is currently touring with Sparklehorse, on whose album Johnny Hott and Bob Rupe played), and Coby Batty. Steven McCarthy might also join Paul Westerberg on his tour in support of his new solo album. Johnny Hott has joined Cracker for their new album and tour (check out this review of it in our new webzine, Plug).
